There was a time when the rivers of Monteverde’s cloud forest shimmered with its colors.

Among moss-covered stones and crystal-clear streams, the Variable Harlequin Frog lived as one of the forest’s most delicate treasures. Small, vibrant, and unforgettable, it became part of the living soul of Costa Rica’s misty mountains.

And then, it disappeared.

Changes in climate, humidity, and a silent disease altered one of the world’s most fragile ecosystems. Little by little, the Variable Harlequin Frog vanished from Monteverde, becoming one of the most painful losses in the history of the cloud forest.

For years, silence took its place.

But nature still holds miracles.

Decades later, small populations began to reappear in other humid regions of Costa Rica, reminding the world that even the most fragile species can survive when forests are given the chance to heal.

Today, the Variable Harlequin Frog remains a symbol of everything that makes Monteverde unique: beauty, fragility, and hope.
